“New Edition” is an American R&B/Pop band from Boston, Massachusetts. It was founded by Bobby Brown in 1978. The group name is taken to mean a new edition of the Jackson Five. New Edition became popular in the 1980s and is considered the blueprint of a boy band nowadays. The original group members included Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant. Bobby Brown left the group in late 1985 to follow his solo career along with Ralph Tresvant, who also established his solo image. The group continued as a quartet for one album until they introduced Johnny Gill to the lineup in 1987.
