An organization that is simply called Black Lives Matter exists as a decentralized network with over thirty chapters in the United States and sister organizations worldwide. This movement initiated in 2013 with the use of hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who was involved in shooting an African American teen Trayvon Martin to death in February 2012. In 2014, this movement became nationally recognized after the death of two African Americans, Michael Brown and Eric Gamer resulting in a protest and unrest in Ferguson, a city near St. Louis and New York, respectively. The Ferguson protest was actually against all the extrajudicial killings of black people in general, as well as Michael Brown.
